Sanofi had already announced that it would grant the Mainz-based company Biontech access to its production infrastructure in Frankfurt-Höchst and take over late-stage production steps such as filling to support the delivery of the Covid-19 vaccine.
In Marcy-l’Etoile near Lyon, Sanofi now wants to help with the pharmaceutical formulation and filling of the vaccine from Johnson & Johnson in a range of around twelve million doses per month.
The US manufacturer Johnson & Johnson had applied for European approval for its vaccine.
“While our priority remains to advance our two Covid-19 vaccine programs, we recognize that there are opportunities to increase supply and expand access to Covid-19 vaccines,” said Sanofi Director General Paul Hudson. Sanofi also announced the start of a phase 2 study for its lead vaccine candidate, which is being developed with UK company GSK (GlaxoSmithKline).
