With a sovereign performance, RB Leipzig prevailed in the Bundesliga at Hertha BSC and significantly reduced the gap to front runner FC Bayern.
After the 3-0 (1-0) victory on Sunday (February 21, 2021) at Hertha, Leipzig came close to Bayern as second in the table, up to two points. Hertha BSC, on the other hand, stuck in the table cellar after the eighth game without a win.
Marcel Sabitzer put RB in the lead in the first half (28th minute) with a great long-range shot. After the break, the Leipzig Nordi Mukiele (71.) and Willi Orban (84.) decided the game with their goals. For RB Leipzig it was the fifth Bundesliga victory in a row that captain Sabitzer had a declaration of war in the direction of Munich. “It’s a duel now,” said the Austrian, “but we can’t just talk about it, we have to stick with it, be focused. The n it can be enough in the end.”
Dardai son in starting line-up for the first time
Hertha’s coach Pal Dardai, on the other hand, was served. “We had our chances to score. If you don’t use them, you have no chance,” said the coach. “We got a little punishment, the first half wasn’t bad.”
Dardai had surprised with some changes in the line-up before kick-off. In addition to Rio World Champion Sami Khedira, his son Marton Dardai, 19 years old, also celebrated his starting line-up debut for the Berlin team. He justified his father’s trust with an overall decent performance. At RB, coach Julian Nagelsmann helped attacker Hwang Hee-chan get his first Bundesliga appearance right from the start. The South Korean could not set any decisive accents and was later replaced.
First at eye level
In the beginning the Berliners had opportunities, but made far too little of them. Striker Krzysztof Piatek missed the ball in the 18th minute, as did Dodi Lukebakio a little later. Hertha’s strongest phase brought Sabitzer to an abrupt end. The Leipzig playmaker took heart from 30 meters and scored well to make it 1-0. Rune Jarstein watched the ball in the Hertha goal in amazement. “It jumps up well and hits it right,” said Sabitzer later about his artificial shot.
Impressed by Sabitzer’s goal
After the change, Matheus Cunha (51st) had the compensation for Hertha on the foot. Peter Gulasci parried his low shot in the RB goal. A good chance, not used again – characteristic of the Berliners. Inevitably, the tide turned in favor of the title contender, for whom the substitute Mukiele made the 2-0. The French benefited from a mistake by his fellow countryman Matteo Guendouzi, who had recently been substituted on. Nemanja Radonjic (80th) had the chance to catch up on the other side, instead Orban hit with his head. So in the end there was a clear victory for the first Bayern pursuer.
Hertha travels to Wolfsburg
