The South African Corona variant is spreading strongly in Tyrol. That is why there was even a closure of the Austrian federal state in the room. For the time being, the government in Vienna refrains from doing so – but warns against unnecessary travel.
Austria has issued a travel warning for the state of Tyrol with immediate effect due to the corona situation, which is considered explosive. This is what the federal government said in Vienna.
Most recently, the more contagious South African coronavirus variant had spread strongly in Tyrol. “ The refore everything must be done to prevent these mutations from spreading further and further,” said Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz. He called for trips to Tyrol “to be reduced to the absolute minimum”.
In addition, the government is calling on all holidaymakers who have been in Tyrol in the past two weeks to take a corona test. Travelers from Tyrol should also be tested before driving to another federal state. Health Minister Rudi Anschober said the situation was being reviewed on an ongoing basis. “Additional measures are possible at any time.”
State government presents additional measures
According to experts, there are now 293 confirmed cases of the South African mutation in Tyrol, the number of active cases is therefore estimated at at least 140. Experts therefore called for the isolation of at least individual areas.
During the negotiations with the Ministry of Health, the Tyrolean provincial government presented its own proposals for containment and called on the population to restrict mobility. In future, guests will have to show a negative corona test to use cable cars. On top of that, there should be nationwide corona tests in districts where the virus has often been detected.
A central question is also whether the focus is primarily on Tyrol because the country is researching the infection situation on a large scale. “We are pioneers in sequencing in Austria, which is why we have the most complete and comprehensive data available at the moment,” said Country Manager Günther Platter.
Söder for border closings
The Foreign Office in Berlin had previously warned against all unnecessary, tourist trips to Austria. The whole of Austria – with the exception of the exclaves Jungholz and Kleinwalsertal – is now a risk area.
Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) brought a closure of the borders with Tyrol into play. Bavaria agreed with Chancellor Angela Merkel and Interior Minister Horst Seehofer that this was necessary on the German side, he told the “Münchner Merkur”. Any border traffic for tourist reasons or for shopping must be avoided. “This is controlled more closely with border controls and veil searches. Should the risk increase, border closings with Tyrol must not be taboo either.”
Söder said he was very worried about the virus mutations. Experts rated the South African mutation as more dangerous than the British one. “ The course of the disease should be more severe and the resilience to vaccinations higher. This mutation would set us back a long way.” Now it could be that there is a greater risk of infection for Bavaria from Tyrol again.
