Streaming services: Disney + takes market share from Amazon Prime and Netflix


Disney brought its own streaming service onto the market with Disney + at the end of 2019. Within the last year, Disney + was able to establish itself as one of the four major German streaming providers alongside Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Sky. This is proven by figures from the analysis company Goldmedia, which Golem received on request.

Both Amazon Prime Video and Netflix lost significant market shares in 2020. Netflix’s market share decreased 2.1% compared to late 2019 and was around 24% in the quarter of 2020. On the other hand, Amazon lost 5.2% compared to the previous year and had a market share of around 33% at the end of 2020.


However, the rapid rise of Disney + is the hardest hit for the streaming service and Sky Ticket. In 2019, it had a market share of just under 12% of the streaming subscriptions concluded in Germany. In the quarter of 2020, Sky Ticket only accounted for 9%. Disney + was also able to claim 9% for itself despite or perhaps because of its comparatively young existence. Sky hit the launch of a Disney-owned streaming service in another way. In the past, many of the great Disney blockbusters, such as those from the Star Wars and Marvel universes, first ran on Sky. In the meantime, however, the pay TV broadcaster has to do without the named sizes, since Disney understandably prefers to implement them as its own exclusive title.

Telekom’s streaming service Magenta TV achieved a market share of just under 6% in 2020. TV Now and RTL together have 4%. Apple TV + achieved a market share of 3% in Germany in 2020. Overall, the German streaming industry generated sales of around € 2.5 billion in 2020. This corresponds to an increase of 28% compared to the previous year.
