Easter is already in around five weeks. For motorists, this means: time to switch to summer tires. In the annual summer tire test, the TCS has now examined which are the best rubbers for mid-range (225/50 R17 98Y) and compact models (205/55 R16 91V) (click here for the guide: This is what the names on the tires mean ).
The largest mobility club in Switzerland tested the 32 tires for 13 different criteria, including driving behavior on dry and wet roads, wear, noise and fuel consumption.
Firestone fails
One candidate failed in both tire dimensions. In the 17 tested tires for mid-range models (225/50 R17 98Y) such as Alfa Romeo Giulia, Audi A4 and A5, BMW 3 and 4 series or Mercedes C-Class, four tires from the brands Falken, Continental, Kumho and Bridgestone cut the final rating «Highly recommended» and 12 with the rating «recommendable». Only the Firestone Roadhawk scored “not recommended” in the test: Although its properties on dry roads are satisfactory, the tire warms up, but the test vehicle feels imprecise. In addition, the Firestone was noticeable because of its rather high level of wear and tear.
King is not king
Among the 15 tested tires for compact vehicles (205/55 R16 91V) such as Audi A3, Ford Focus, Mercedes A-Class, Toyota Corolla or VW Golf, three tires from the brands Continental, Semperit and Bridgestone achieved the final rating of “very recommendable”. Eleven other tires were rated “recommendable” and only one finished the test with “conditionally recommended”. This is the King Meiler Sport 1, which was the only retreaded tire to hold its own against 14 new tires. However, it could neither shine on dry nor on wet roads and was also noticed as the loudest tire in the test field.
