The man from Zurich was downhill world champion in 1987 and has twice cleared crystal for his overall victories in the downhill world cup (1978/79 and 79/80).
The best of the day receives a medal, while the best and most consistent athlete receives a ball over a whole season. That is why a World Cup crystal ball is more valuable from a sporting point of view than a World Cup or Olympic medal! “
Odermatt hunting Pinturault
Marco Odermatt missed precious metal in Cortina despite a convincing performance in the downhill (4th place). In the fight for the little giant ball, the 23-year-old Nidwalden exceptional talent is in full swing.
Odermatt, who was on the podium in four of six giant slaloms in the current World Cup season, is just 40 points behind Alexis Pinturault (Fr) in this ranking.
And four races are still outstanding in this category, two of which will be held in Bansko, Bulgaria, next weekend. “Odi” even has outsider chances in the race for the big ball.
In this intermediate classification, too, Pinturault is at the top after 27 of 38 decisions, while Odermatt is second 225 points behind the 29-year-old French.
Feuz in Klammer’s footsteps
After his two Kitzbühel victories, Beat Feuz is the leader in the overall downhill standings. Three races before the end of the month, the Emmental’s lead over Austria’s double Olympic champion Matthias Mayer is 48 points.
Feuz could win the downhill ball for the fourth time in a row, which so far only Franz Klammer (67, Austria) has achieved between 1974 and 1978. Didier Cuche has triumphed four times in the downhill classification, but not four times in a row.
This is what it looks like in slalom
In 1968, Engadin Dumeng Giovanoli (80) was the only Swiss so far to have topped the slalom classification. Ramon Zenhäusern (28) has at least a mathematical chance at the «Giovanoli legacy».
Before the last two “zigzag” competitions in Kranjska Gora (Sln) and on Lenzerheide, the double meter is second 146 points behind the new combined world champion Marco Schwarz (25, Austria).
In the World Cup slalom, both fell short of their expectations. Black was eliminated in the second run, Zenhäusern left the World Cup in eleventh place.
