SPD health expert Lauterbach paints a pessimistic picture for the next week: Germany would be at the beginning of the third wave, he said in an interview. Two things in particular are needed now.
SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach assumes, based on the current Corona numbers, that the trend in Germany is turning negative: “I think it is certain that these numbers indicate that we are at the beginning of the third wave,” he said in the SWR. The Robert Koch Institute reported more new infections on Saturday than a week ago, and the R value has recently increased slightly.
The lockdown was able to displace the original coronavirus variant. However, the measures against the spread of the new mutants were not sufficient. He therefore reckons that they will displace the old virus. “
The third wave is also the beginning of a new pandemic,” said the SPD politician.
More tests, more vaccinations
The refore, they have to be adhered to even more strictly, explained Lauterbach. You also need more antigen tests and more vaccinations. In this context, he criticized the fact that Astrazeneca’s vaccine had “wrongly fallen into disrepute”. He now has to be reviled quickly, in all three prioritization groups. This is a “pragmatic solution”.
Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) spoke of a “really difficult phase” on Saturday. However, the vaccinations would give confidence. He announced that he wanted to adjust the vaccination ordinance again in order to prioritize primary school teachers and educators.
The Robert Koch Institute reported 9,164 new infections within one day on Saturday. That was 810 more than on Saturday the previous week. In addition, the so-called R value – another important figure – rose slightly from 1.01 the previous day to 1.07.
