The first work is already impressive – the Ioniq 5.
Like many other automakers, Hyundai would have imagined the launch of its new electric brand Ioniq to be a little more atmospheric and, in particular, more impressive. But the corona crisis is making the auto industry difficult and so Hyundai must also carry the brand launch and the world premiere of its smart starter model Ioniq 5 virtually on the screen into the automotive world. While other automakers only provide the core brand with an annex or a sub-brand based on the model of BMW i, Mercedes EQ or VW ID, Hyundai is taking a different approach and giving the upcoming electric family a completely independent name: Ioniq.
So far, the Hyundai Ioniq has been a single model, with various electrified drives, which should put pressure on the former hybrid champion Toyota Prius in particular. Almost two years ago, those in charge of the Korean group decided to launch a new brand. This should give the electric models a home of their own and set the vehicles apart from the combustion models. “With Ioniq, we are striving for a paradigm shift in terms of our future electric vehicles and how our customers can experience them,” says Wonhong Cho, Global Chief Marketing Officer of Hyundai Motor Company, “by going beyond conventional thinking, we are becoming individualized for our customers Offer experiences with our electric vehicles that match a digitally networked and environmentally friendly lifestyle.
The Ioniq 5 is an electric mid-range crossover that was developed on the specially developed Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) as one of the first vehicles with 800-volt technology. Under the brand umbrella, Hyundai wants to gradually bring further numerically named electric models to the various markets after the Ioniq 5.
The Ioniq 5 as a competitor to VW ID.4 or Audi Q4 E-Tron is based on the electric concept 45, which was presented at the IAA 2019 in Frankfurt as a homage to the first Hyundai Pony Coupé Concept from 1975.

The bonnet extends over the fenders to the wheel arches and thus extends over the entire width of the vehicle. In combination with the particular gap dimensions, the result is a clear and valuable overall picture. A good drag coefficient and 20-inch wheels should ensure a confident appearance and low rolling resistance. “
The innovative design of the Ioniq 5 offers a completely new customer experience. It is reminiscent of our iconic Pony model, which established Hyundai’s design DNA, “explains SangYup Lee, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Global Design Center,” the interior is made from environmentally friendly materials and underlines our commitment to new people to offer sustainable and advanced mobility solutions. Starting with the Ioniq 5, our fully electric sub-brand will redefine the relationship between people and their vehicles. ”
Charge enough energy for 100 kilometers in 5 minutes
The top speed is locked at 185 km / h on all models and the customer can choose between battery packs with 58 or 72.6 kWh, which should guarantee ranges of up to 500 kilometers.

Although the Ioniq is in the middle class, the wheelbase is three meters in the upper class and offers a lot of space inside. At the front there are particularly comfortable comfort chairs, which, thanks to their thin backrests, should provide more legroom in the rear. But the seats in the rear can also be adjusted or the rear seats can be adjusted in length by 14 centimeters. The interior is optionally made of recycled material, wool or leather.
The cargo items have space under the front trunk.
The electric crossover is equipped with an 800-volt charging system that enables a range of 100 kilometers with a charging time of five minutes. In addition, thanks to the bidirectional charging capability, the customer can also feed external sources with 110 or 220 volt alternating current. A sports sedan named Ioniq 6, based on the electrically powered Prophecy concept vehicle, will follow in the coming year. According to current planning, a large SUV will roll into the beginning of 2024.
