Vaccination sequence: are teachers and educators preferred? – Domestic policy

On Monday, February 22nd, daycare centers and elementary schools in ten federal states will start working again after a compulsory break for weeks.  The n close contact with children is inevitable for teachers and educators.

Many countries and associations are therefore campaigning for these groups to be vaccinated early and for them to be given priority in the vaccination sequence.

Lower Saxony made the start: ©

The re are already specific plans at the State Ministry of Health. “All opening scenarios rightly provide a high priority for the education sector. It is therefore only logical to also vaccinate teachers with a higher priority than before, ”said Lower Saxony Health Minister Carola Reimann (53, SPD) “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung”.

According to the current vaccination ordinance, teachers and educators would probably not have their turn until the summer. ©

The y belong to the third priority group with “higher priority”, together with those with previous illnesses and those aged 70 to 75.
Before that: a total of 15.3 million people in groups 1 “highest priority” and 2 “high priority”. This includes all people over 75 years of age, medical staff with a high risk of infection, people with dementia and people with disabilities.

▶︎ A fundamental decision should also be made in the health ministers’ conference on Monday. According to Health Minister Jens Spahn (40, CDU), there is a “relatively large consensus” among the ministers on the issue.

Bavaria’s Minister of State Klaus Holetschek (56) on BILD: “I support corresponding plans to expand prioritization group 2 to include educators and elementary school teachers. ©

The se were previously classified in priority group 3. Since the necessary distance of 1.5 meters often cannot be maintained when working with small children, primary school teachers and daycare staff should be vaccinated sooner than before, ”said the CSU policeman.

The  Association of Education and Upbringing (VBE) has warned of an opening competition between the countries and health risks for teachers. “©

The  openings are not a competition in which the federal state wins, which implements the most extensive easing and risks the health of everyone involved to the maximum”, said VBE boss Udo Beckmann the “editorial network Germany”.

Beckmann called for a nationwide uniform step-by-step plan, in which the incidence value for openings is the guiding principle. “A step-by-step plan based on clear incidences would ensure comparability and transparency across Germany,” said the VBE boss.

The  German Philologist Association (DPhV) agrees with the demand. “If politicians want full face-to-face teaching again, they must have offered all teachers a vaccination in advance,” said association chairwoman Susanne Lin-Klitzing to the newspapers of the “Funke Mediengruppe”.

The  Education and Science Union (GEW) is skeptical about the openings on Monday: “©

The  countries that are now opening their schools are taking a high risk – for the health of teachers, students and their parents,” said the chairwoman Marlis Tepe the newspapers of the “Funke Mediengruppe”.

Vaccination in conversation with AstraZeneca

The re is also talk of vaccinating teachers with the AstraZeneca vaccine, which in Germany is only approved for people under 65 years of age.

Bavaria’s Minister of State Holetschek to BILD: “©

The  vaccine from AstraZeneca protects against severe courses of Covid-19 disease and is therefore a good and safe vaccine.”

The  MDR reported, citing statements by the Saxon Minister of Health Petra Köpping (SPD), that all teachers and educators could soon be offered a vaccination with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Brandenburg’s Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (59, SPD) wrote to Jens Spahn asking for an examination of the extent to which those from the third group in the vaccination sequence could already be vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine. “This would also enable a faster vaccination of teachers and educators,” it says.

Support comes from SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach (58). In BILD am SONNTAG he called for the AstraZeneca vaccine to be released immediately for all those under 65 years of age from the first three groups. “©

The  vaccine is left behind because not enough people from the first priority group register or do not show up for the appointment. This is an absurd and unbearable situation, ”said Lauterbach. “With the AstraZeneca vaccine, we should now open the vaccination centers unbureaucratically to everyone under 65 from the first three priority groups. ©

The n we could finally fully utilize the vaccination centers. ”

▶ ︎ Berlin’s Senator for Health Dilek Kalayci (54, SPD) also supports the demand for an earlier vaccination. Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey (42, SPD) has already emphasized that schools and day-care centers must be opened “responsibly”, with compliance with hygiene rules and protective measures for staff.

Giffey also spoke out in favor of testing teachers and educators for Corona up to twice a week.
