A bang in the power struggle: As the advisory board of VfB Stuttgart announced on Sunday, the incumbent President Claus Vogt will be the sole candidate for president.
“From the group of persons eligible for a majority, however, there was no willingness to run against the incumbent, so that Claus Vogt will now run as the sole candidate for the office of president for the next four years.”
The further applicant Volker Zeh is therefore not available for election due to the decision of the advisory board. At the same time, the advisory board appealed to the members to attend the general assembly planned for March 28th and to cast their votes. VfB is facing enormous challenges that can only be overcome together.
Three advisory board members resign
The chairman Wolf-Dietrich Erhard announced at the end of the meeting that he would suspend his mandate with “immediate effect”, the club announced. “Even if I have nothing to do with the data protection affair personally, with my decision I would like to help ensure that a new start is possible,” said Erhard. Claudia Maintok, Vice Chairwoman of the Advisory Board, and James Bührer resigned from their offices for personal reasons before the actual meeting.
Two board members have already been dismissed
The supervisory board of VfB Stuttgart 1893 AG had already made the first personnel decisions in an extraordinary meeting on Saturday and dismissed Jochen Röttgermann, Marketing Director, and Stefan Heim, CFO. In addition, the chairman of the board, Thomas Hitzlsperger, was given “unlimited trust”.
Quarrel and unrest in the club for weeks
It has been simmering behind the scenes of the club for weeks. Fines proceedings had been opened against VfB on suspicion of betrayal of secrets. On Friday the presidium decided against the will of President Vogt that the general meeting should take place on March 28th and in digital form. In addition, Hitzlsperger had sharply criticized Vogt at the end of last year and announced a campaign candidate for the presidency.
The ex-international later apologized for his choice of words and withdrew his candidacy.
