Emma Coronel Aispuro is accused of being involved in the activities of the Sinaloa cartel formerly run by her husband.
The wife of the imprisoned Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán has been arrested in the United States. Emma Coronel Aispuro is accused of being involved in the activities of the Sinaloa cartel, which was previously run by her husband, according to the Justice Department in Washington.
The 31-year-old is charged with a conspiracy to smuggle cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana into the United States.
Coronel was arrested at Dulles International Airport near Washington. It was not previously known that the US Attorney’s Office was seeking her arrest. It is expected to appear on Tuesday via video link in a federal court in the US capital.
Life imprisonment for Guzmán
“El Chapo” was extradited to the USA in 2017 by the Mexican authorities. In July 2019, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for drug trafficking, money laundering and other offenses. Guzmán is in a maximum security prison in the mountainous desert of the state of Colorado.
Coronel is the mother of twins who stem from her relationship with Guzmán. She has both Mexican and US citizenship.
A few months after her husband’s conviction, Coronel appeared on a reality series on US broadcaster VH1. In an episode filmed on board a luxury yacht near Miami, Florida, she said she would like to lead a normal life and build her own fashion brand. “Sometimes you just want to do what other people do,” she said as she sipped from her champagne glass.
