- Whether you need dishwasher salt depends on the hardness of the water.
- If you use dishwasher tablets, you can often do without additional regeneration salt.
- The water hardness varies locally. Ask for details from the supplier or determine the degree of hardness in the water with tests from the pharmacy.
Many detergents for the dishwasher offer 3 in 1 or 5 in 1 or even more functions in one tab. A salt substitute that prevents calcification is also often included. Nevertheless, the warning light for missing salt continues to flash on many machines. Do you have to fill it in additionally?
The dishwasher salt will help soften the water. If you live in places with water that is not considered to be very hard, you can do without additional salt and rinse aid when using tabs, explains the Washing Forum. This applies to a water hardness of up to 21 degrees.
If the hardness of the tap water is less than 4 degrees and is therefore particularly soft, you can do without salt or tabs with salt substitutes – unless the manufacturer of the machine makes other recommendations in one of the two cases.
In other places you can use rinse aid, salt and multifunctional sticks with the same active ingredients at the same time – but you should rather avoid them. Because the double consumption is a burden for the environment, and you also pay more for the products.
Inquire about water hardness from supplier
The degree of hardness is also often stated on the annual statement. Appropriate test strips are also available in pharmacies.
Hard water contains a lot of lime that builds up in the machine. That affects their labor. Dishwashers therefore usually have their own water softening system into which the regeneration salt is filled.
