Dominic Stricker wins the Challenger tournament in Lugano.
It is his first title on the professional tour.
Only Federer and Wawrinka were slightly younger in their first finals.
He is probably the greatest hope of Swiss men’s tennis: Dominic Stricker (ATP 874). In Lugano, the 18-year-old from Bern played only his second Challenger tournament (second highest ATP level) this week – and marched straight to the final. On Sunday he crowned his outstanding performance with the first professional title. He leaves Vitali Saschko, who is almost 500 places higher, no chance and sweeps the Ukrainian away 6: 4 and 6: 2.
Stricker made tennis history when he reached the finals. Before him, only two Swiss were younger than the mega-talent when they entered the Challenger final for the first time: Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka. Stricker caused a stir internationally for the first time last year. In a purely Swiss final, he secured the junior title at the French Open against Leandro Riedi. Thanks to the tournament victory in Lugano, Stricker should make a decent set in the world rankings.
