In connection with the ammunition affair, Minister Kramp-Karrenbauer has the behavior of the KSK commander checked. She has initiated a preliminary disciplinary investigation against him. During that time, however, he remains at his post.

Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has initiated a preliminary investigation against the commander in connection with the ammunition affair with the Bundeswehr elite force KSK. It was now up to the military disciplinary attorney to check whether KSK commander Markus Kreitmayr had violated the rules with the amnesty he ordered, the minister said. During the investigation, the brigadier general remained at his post: he had “deserved a fair and transparent trial”.

Kreitmayr leads a reform process in the elite unit of the German Army. However, he is charged with the fact that soldiers were able to return hoarded or stolen ammunition in the past year without further registration or consequences. The declared aim was to bring ammunition fully under control.

Kramp-Karrenbauer spoke of a “culture of systematic disregard for rules when dealing with ammunition” that prevailed at the KSK before General Kreitmayr took over command. This also raises questions to the command level of the KSK “at least the years 2017 and 2018”.

Green politicians: investigation inevitable

The Green defense politician Tobias Lindner called the investigation inevitable: “Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer is ultimately responsible for the fact that it is only now – months after the ministry learned about the amnesty – that Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer is responsible,” said the member of the Bundestag. “Not only Brigadier General Kreitmayr and the KSK need to know who is leading the association through a difficult reform process.”

The minister wants to travel to Calw on Monday to speak to the soldiers personally. On Tuesday she will then submit the second interim report on the implementation of the reform package to combat right-wing extremist tendencies at the KSK. “The Special Forces Command is a highly specialized unit that has proven itself in heavy-duty operations. However, the KSK must continue to prove over the next few weeks and months that it is capable of a fundamental change in its internal culture,” said Kramp-Karrenbauer on the status of the reforms . “From me there is neither a free ticket nor a pre-judgment for the KSK.”

Even before the ammunition affair, the KSK had hit the headlines through a series of right-wing extremist incidents. Minister Kramp-Karrenbauer had therefore already dissolved a KSK division last year. In the summer she wants to make a fundamental decision about the future of the elite troops.
