Apple releases emergency update for iPhones and Co.

Apple releases emergency updates for new and old iPhones

Updates for smartphones are not uncommon. But now Apple has released a surprising update for its mobile operating systems. It closes a dangerous security hole.

Apple released security updates for iPhones and iPads on Friday evening. The company recommends installing it immediately. The update was also released for older devices that are actually no longer supported.

According to Apple, a loophole in Webkit allows web content to be exploited for universal cross-site scripting. This is a popular and dangerous attack method that primarily tries to access user data – such as log-in information. According to Apple, there are reports that the vulnerability may already have been actively exploited. The vulnerability was found by experts at Google.

For which devices is the update available?

The updates are available for all Apple mobile operating systems. iPhones users can update to iOS version 14.4.2, iPad users to iPad OS 14.4.2. Apple Watch users get access to WatchOS 7.3.3.

Older devices are also supplied with the update. Users of the iPhone 6s, which usually does not receive any more updates, can update to the iOS version iOS 12.5.2. Apple names iPhone 6s and newer, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 2 and newer, iPad 5th generation and newer, iPad mini 4 and newer and iPod touch (7th generation) as devices for which an update is available .

What to do

Usually the system should automatically check for updates and inform users. You can also start updates manually. You can do this in the settings:

  • Open the Settings app on the iPhone.
  • Now select «General» and then «Software update».
  • If there are any updates, they will be displayed here. Here you can also check whether automatic updates are activated.

The first app at the time was only available for the iPhone, and it was free at launch. In an interview, the developer, Manuel Kasper, promised the early release of an Android version requested by many users. And:

He kept his word. In contrast to WhatsApp.

Some may remember that there is an identical …
