Avalanche accident: ex-snowboard world champion Pomagalski dead – news.ORF.at

Former French snowboard world champion Julie Pomagalski died in an avalanche in the Swiss Alps. That was confirmed by the National Olympic Committee of France (CNOSF) today. According to the police, the famous French mountain guide Bruno Putelli was also killed in the accident yesterday on the 2,961 meter high Gemsstock.

According to the police, the 40-year-old was away from the ski slopes with three other freeriders when a slab came off and buried three of them under itself. One of the victims was rescued slightly injured, but for Pomagalski and Putelli any rescue came too late.

In 1999, Pomagalski won the title of snowboard cross world champion in Berchtesgaden, Germany. She won several World Cups. Pomagalski competed repeatedly with the former Olympic snowboard champion Karine Ruby, who subsequently trained as a mountain guide. Ruby died in 2009 at the age of 31 when she fell into a crevice on Mont Blanc.
