Bad news for FC Bayern before the top game on Saturday against RB Leipzig: Star striker Robert Lewandowski will be out for weeks.
March 30, 2021
World footballer Robert Lewandowski will be absent from FC Bayern Munich for around four weeks due to a knee injury, according to the club. The star striker has contracted a ligament stretch and will therefore also fail in the top Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig on Holy Saturday and the Champions League quarter-finals against Paris Saint-Germain, as the German record champions announced on Tuesday.
Should Lewandowski return after around four weeks, he would have missed five Bundesliga games and possibly a possible semi-final first leg in the premier class in the groundbreaking phase of the season. The 32-year-old Pole was substituted on Sunday evening in Poland’s World Cup qualifier against Andorra (3-0) after a good hour. Poland’s association had initially spoken of a downtime of usually “five to ten days” for injuries of this type. From the international match Lewandowski traveled to Munich, where the diagnosis has now been made.
No showdown with the PSG superstars
The longer compulsory break is not only painful for the goals of the club before the season finale, but also for the attacker’s personal record hunt. With 35 Bundesliga goals in 25 games, the 32-year-old is well on the way to cracking Gerd Müller’s age-old record. And Lewandowski is now missing on Europe’s stage in the test of strength with PSG and their superstars Neymar and Kylian Mbappé. After the first leg in Munich on Wednesday, the second leg is due six days later in Paris. In the previous year, Bayern had defeated Paris in the final of the premier class.Lewandowski was last longer at the end of February 2020. At that time he missed three games due to a shin injury – that was the longest injury-related break for the goal machine as a Bayern professional.
