Düsseldorf Tuesday afternoon, an anonymous bidder at Christie’s action house paid £ 16.8 million gross for a Banksy painting. “Game Changer” shows a kneeling boy who has picked up a doll with a Red Cross sister from a basket and is holding it up. It is the homage of the artist, who has still not been exposed, to the nurses who performed at their best during the pandemic.

The previous record for auctioned works by the socially critical sprayer is 9.9 million pounds for the satirical “monkey parliament”. The promotional house Sotheby’s achieved this maximum price in October 2019.

Christie’s top auctioneer Jussi Pylkänen collected bids from all continents with sovereign patience. He felt when the bidders needed a little more time. At his friendly request “one more”, the hammer price climbed to £ 14.4 million without commission. Banksy will donate these proceeds to the National Health Service of Great Britain. Christie’s puts a sizeable portion of its commission on top.

The art scene bows to the tireless nurses and carers for Covid sufferers. Once again, a Banksy work embodies the current zeitgeist. The hand-painted picture was a real “game changer” for the price level of the artist, who finally found its way off the street into the auction room.
