After severe criticism of the corona resolutions by the federal and state governments, the German federal government has overturned the lockdown over the Easter days. Chancellor Angela Merkel announced this on Wednesday in a short-term conference call with the prime ministers of the federal states, as it was announced to the public. At 12.30 p.m. there should be a corresponding statement.
Merkel explained that the costs and benefits of such a regulation were not in a reasonable proportion. The debate is determined by the increasing number of new infections and the warning from the Robert Koch Institute, for example, that the numbers could rise very sharply until Easter due to the spread of more contagious virus variants.
Again higher new coronavirus infections in Germany
The RKI again reported higher numbers of new corona infections. On Wednesday they were 15,813, 2378 cases above the value of the previous week. The seven-day incidence, however, remained at 108.1 compared to the previous day. The value indicates how many people per 100,000 inhabitants have been infected with the corona virus in the past seven days. “The situation is still dire and we have to extend the lockdown,” said Laschet. “If this continues as it is at the moment, we will be well over 200 incidence after Easter and we will then come back to the limits of the resilience of the healthcare system.”
According to the RKI, 248 other people died within 24 hours in connection with Covid-19. This increases the number to 75,212. In total, more than 2.69 million people in Germany have tested positive for the corona virus so far. The number of corona intensive care patients registered in hospitals rose to 3,159 on Tuesday, according to Divi Register.
The situation is very different from region to region – which also explains the difficult discussion among the 16 country leaders. According to the RKI, nine countries have an incidence of over 100, Thuringia 210. In Saxony on the Czech border, the number of new infections has climbed to more than 150 within a week. Especially the districts in Saxony and Bavaria on the border with the Czech Republic show very high values. In contrast, Saarland reported an incidence of 55.5 and Schleswig-Holstein of 58.4. The coastal states had recently proposed vacation in their own state in holiday apartments, but this met with resistance from other states and the federal government.
