In the fight against the corona pandemic, there could be a new early warning system in Hamburg. For this purpose, the wastewater is to be examined more closely.

The governing parties SPD and Greens want to submit an application to the next citizenship meeting. Genetic residues of the coronavirus can be detected in wastewater. This makes it possible to determine how much the infection is currently spreading – and earlier than with the tests previously used.

First examine centrally

First of all, it is about a central measurement of the overall urban infection situation in the central sewage treatment plant Köhlbrandhöft / Dradenau. Later on, decentralized measurements could be used to localize outbreaks more precisely and protect particularly endangered facilities, for example. “An early warning system to identify local corona outbreaks can be another decisive factor in the fight against the pandemic,” said spokesman Johannes Müller.

The background to the possible tests is that people suffering from Covid-19 usually also excrete viruses with their stool. If many people in a region fall ill at the same time, then coronavirus residues can also be detected in the sewage. This was proven by experts from the Technical University of Dresden and the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig.
