Corona news at a glance:

Braun gives hope to travel from August

11:57 a.m .: Chancellery chief Helge Braun assumes that the infection situation will relax in May and that travel will be possible again from August. “I expect that the relieving effect of the vaccination and the beginning of the warm season in May will be noticeable,” said the CDU politician of “Bild am Sonntag”.

The first positive effects will be seen at Pentecost, provided that the situation does not get out of hand by then. “I think it’s realistic that trips will be possible again in August,” said Braun. However, given the current developments, Easter leave is not justifiable.

Study on Covid-19: Death rate in university clinics fell in the course of 2020

10.03 a.m .: According to a study, the death rate among Covid 19 patients in German university hospitals fell significantly in the course of 2020. From the point of view of the scientists, this can be evidence of improved treatments and increasing experience of the clinical teams in the pandemic, said a research group from the University of Erlangen. She examined hospital stays of around 1,300 Covid-19 patients in 14 German university hospitals from January to September 2020.

The good news: The analysis shows a decline in the average death rate from initially 20.7 percent (January to April) to 12.7 percent (May to September). But there are also many downsides: Overall, almost a fifth of all Covid patients (18.8 percent) died in the 14 university clinics from January to September. In ventilated people, the death rate in the first section from January to April was as high as 39.8 percent. In the later period from May to September it fell slightly to around a third (33.7 percent).

The results confirm observations from the register of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (Divi). She, too, sees lessons from the first wave and progress in avoiding serious disease courses in intensive care units.

RKI: Almost 4000 more new infections than last Sunday – the incidence rises to 129.7

07.33 a.m .: In Germany, more than 17,100 new corona infections were reported within one day. As the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Sunday morning, citing information from the health authorities, 17,176 new infections were detected.

More than 20,400 new infections were registered on Saturday; on the previous Sunday the number was 13,733. The number of new infections is usually lower on the weekends than the weekly average, because fewer tests are carried out on the weekends and fewer test results are transmitted.

The seven-day incidence rose further to 129.7 on Sunday. On Saturday, the nationwide incidence value was 124.9 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within a week and on Sunday of last week it was 103.9.

The RKI also reported 90 more deaths related to Covid-19 disease this Sunday. This means that 75,870 people have died in this country since the beginning of the pandemic. The total number of corona infections across Germany is now 2,772,401.

Braun warns of vaccine-resistant mutants: “Most dangerous phase of the pandemic”

Sunday, March 28th, 7:05 am: Chancellery Minister Helge Braun (CDU) has warned of the appearance of vaccine-resistant mutations in the third wave. “We are in the most dangerous phase of the pandemic,” said Braun to “Bild am Sonntag”. “The next few weeks will decide whether we will get the pandemic under control in the foreseeable future. If the number of infections rises rapidly again in parallel with the vaccination, the risk increases that the next virus mutation will become immune to the vaccine.”

In the event of such a mutation, “we would be left empty-handed again,” continues Braun. “Then we would need new vaccines, then we would have to start all over again with the vaccination.” That must be prevented under all circumstances. “We are allowed to do not jeopardize the chance of a largely normal summer by loosening up a few weeks too early. ”

Braun has apologized for his role in the resolution of the “Easter rest period”, which has since been withdrawn. “I also had my share in the resolutions, so I apologize to the citizens who were upset by it,” said Braun. But it will also remain “without Easter rest it is imperative that we bring the corona infections back down”.

Instead of the “Easter rest” there must be regional curfews. “So that the infection process does not get out of control, in regions with incidences over 100 not only relaxations have to be withdrawn, but additional measures have to be taken,” said Braun. “Regional curfews in the evening and at night can help because we have the highest infection rates at private meetings.”

More new infections and fewer deaths than in the previous week – occupancy of intensive care beds continues to rise

8.44 p.m .: The health authorities in the federal states reported 17,931 new corona infections within 24 hours on Saturday, according to an evaluation by FOCUS Online. The number of new infections was again significantly higher than on Saturday the previous week, when the countries reported 15,169 new infections. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 2,762,876 laboratory-confirmed corona infections in Germany.

In addition, 128 further coronavirus-related deaths were reported from the countries within 24 hours. That is less compared to the previous week: Last Saturday, this number was 197 new deaths.

The intensive care beds in the hospitals, on the other hand, fill up more quickly: The number of patients being treated for Covid-19 in intensive care was 3390 on Saturday and increased by 56 compared to the previous day. The R value also increased again. According to the Robert Koch Institute, the 7-day R-value rose on Saturday and is now 1.19 (previous day 1.14).

No emergency brake: Berlin is sticking to easing – Corona tests for shopping

8:13 p.m .: The Berlin Senate is not taking back the recent easing of the corona measures, but wants to secure them by significantly expanding corona tests. From Wednesday, a negative corona test is a prerequisite for every Berliner in order to be able to go shopping in shops beyond supermarkets, pharmacies or drugstores. The governing mayor Michael Müller (SPD) announced this after a Senate meeting on Saturday.

Chief physician of the Zittau Clinic dies of Covid-19

7:07 p.m .: The coronavirus has claimed a hero of the pandemic: The chief physician of the Zittau Clinic, Wolfgang Eipperle, tragically died on March 11th. As the “Sächsische Zeitung” reports, the 61-year-old succumbed to Covid-19 disease. Eipperle himself had only come to the clinic in Zittau last year and helped many patients and saved their lives during the second Corona wave. Now the chief doctor himself has died as a result of a corona infection.

The Oberlausitzer Bergland Clinic said goodbye to the chief physician for internal medicine in an obituary notice. The joint collaboration only lasted about ten months. The clinic is “deeply affected”. We got to know Eipperle as a friendly doctor who was always concerned about his patients.

The city of Zittau in the far east of Saxony was particularly badly affected by the second corona wave before Christmas.

Additional restrictions in regions with incidence above 150

6:55 p.m .: In view of the sharp rise in the number of infections, the corona measures in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are being tightened in some cases. In regions with a seven-day incidence of more than 100, nocturnal exit restrictions will be possible in the future. If the corona infections are classified as locally indefinable, exit restrictions are to be introduced there from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., as Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) announced in Schwerin on Saturday.

In regions in the state with a seven-day incidence of more than 150 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants, additional restrictions should apply. These include closings of zoos, animal parks, museums and driving schools, as can be seen from the decision paper of the state corona summit.

From next Wednesday onwards, visiting the hairdresser will only be possible with a negative corona rapid test. From April 6th, a negative test has to be shown when shopping, as Schwesig explained. In Rostock this should only apply from April 10th. This is where the seven-day incidence is lowest in the country.

Authority: The quality of corona rapid tests has gotten better and better

6:14 p.m .: The quality of many corona self-tests has increased significantly in recent months. “The sensitivity of these rapid tests has become better and better, and that is the prerequisite for us to use them on a broad basis now,” said the President of the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM), Karl Broich, on Saturday at an online discussion event the federal government, where citizens could ask questions.

In the case of 22 products tested by the institute, the quality criteria sensitivity and specificity – i.e. the reliability of detecting infections and non-infections – are well over 90 percent, emphasized Broich. “The problem of false-positive and false-negative test results has become significantly less.” However, the institute also sorted out products during its examination. The BfArM lists the reliable rapid tests on its website.

Broich emphasized that the gold standard for detecting the Covid 19 pathogen is still a PCR test. The President of the Robert Koch Institute, Lothar Wieler, also urged caution: the self-tests are not perfect.
