In Brazil, the number of new corona infections is rising steadily. The highly contagious variant P.1 is said to be responsible for this. A new study comes to explosive results.

+++ 9:41 pm: 80 ventilators from Germany arrived in Brazil, which has been particularly hard hit by the corona pandemic, on an aid flight by the Bundeswehr. The relief supplies had been unloaded in the city of Manaus, the Air Force and the Foreign Office announced on Twitter in the evening. Manaus is the capital of the state of Amazonas, which has a particularly high number of Covid-19 cases within the South American country.

The situation in Brazil has worsened significantly since February in particular. On the one hand, many people do not take the precautionary measures to contain the pandemic, on the other hand, the virus variant P.1, which is now rampant in the South American country, is significantly more contagious than the original Covid-19 pathogen.

Corona in Brazil: health system collapses

The Ministry of Health in Brasília reported 3,650 deaths related to Covid-19 on Friday evening (local time) for the past 24 hours. More than 12.4 million people have been shown to be infected with the coronavirus. Only in the US are the numbers higher.

Brazil has 210 million inhabitants and is 24 times the size of Germany. The health system has collapsed in many places or is collapsing in the process. Medicines, including those for intubating Covid 19 patients, are running out. As the news portal “G1” reports with reference to the research facility “Fundação Oswaldo Cruz” (Fiocruz), the latest data indicate an increase in the disease among younger people.

Numerous infections go back to a new, particularly aggressive virus mutation from the Amazon. The virus variant P.1 has established itself in at least seven Brazilian states and is now being detected more and more frequently in neighboring Uruguay. Individual cases of P.1 have already been reported in Germany.

The Amazon variant is rated as significantly more dangerous than the wild type of the coronavirus. P.1 could be up to twice as infectious. A study from Brazil and Great Britain also provides explosive findings. Accordingly, P.1 could bypass the immune defense of recovered corona patients. Up to 60 percent could therefore become infected with the corona virus a second time – this time with the more aggressive Amazon variant.

Brazilian virus variant P.1 stirs fears: warning of global threat

First report from 03/25/2021: Brazil – While the British variant of the corona virus is spreading in Europe and Germany, there is fear of further corona mutants in Brazil. And the rest of the world is also concerned whether the Brazilian virus variant and the much-criticized corona policy of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro could become a new threat.

Especially in countries where the original coronavirus is already widespread, the virus is looking for new ways through mutations. In Brazil, the second most severely affected country after the USA, variant P.1 is spreading more and more. First of all, the Brazilian variant was detected in Manaus last autumn. P.1 is considered to be even more contagious than the British variant. In the trade magazine „Science“ A research team from São Paulo reported at the beginning of January that in August 2020 already 44 percent of the population in Manaus had antibodies, in October 2020 it should have been over 70 percent. So a form of herd immunity had probably already occurred.

Corona mutation: Brazilian mutant is spreading

According to a pre-print study that was published in early March, the new variant is said to have led to renewed infection in 25 to 61 percent of the cases in Manaus.

Scientists now reckon that the average in Brazil will be up to 3500 deaths per day in the future. More than 12.2 million people in Brazil have already become infected. “This new variant seems to have a greater rate of contagion. The cases seem to develop faster, ”said the epidemiologist Diego Xavier from the research facility“ Fundação Oswaldo Cruz ”(Fiocruz) of the dpa. Brazilian infectiologist Denise Garrett, vice president of the Sabin Vaccine Institute (Washington), even told the BBC that Brazil had become a global threat.

Brazil: Mutant P.1 could become a global threat

According to initial studies, the Biontech / Pfizer vaccine and the controversial Astrazeneca vaccine work better against the Brazilian mutant than initially assumed. However, if the infection rate is high, new mutations could also arise.

The rapid spread of the corona virus in Brazil is attributed by experts to the trivialization of the virus and the controversial corona policy of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as well as the poor health care and precarious living conditions in Brazil.
