Country resolutions – Easter leave: Restrictions abroad, practically impossible in Germany

Shortly before the start of the Easter holidays in most federal states, it is now clear: Holidays in Germany will be made practically impossible, the rules for trips abroad will be tightened even further. There is no ban, but at their most recent meeting the federal and state governments agreed on an appeal to citizens. They should refrain from traveling in Germany and abroad that are not absolutely necessary.

Domestic travel

In addition to Saxony-Anhalt’s head of government Haseloff, the coastal states of Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania had campaigned to enable Easter holidays in their own federal state. However, their advance had failed. Domestic travel is not prohibited, but hotels and holiday apartments are generally closed to tourists. Caf├ęs and restaurants are also not open or are only allowed to sell take-away goods. Visiting relatives is allowed, but only a maximum of five people from two households may come together, not counting children under 14 years of age. Gatherings in public spaces are strictly prohibited on Easter days.

Travel abroad

Anyone who travels abroad despite recommendations to the contrary must note the following: When returning from a foreign risk area, you have to register digitally and also go into quarantine. This currently applies to around 160 out of 200 countries. The quarantine can only be ended prematurely with a negative corona test. Stricter rules apply to areas with virus variants and so-called high-incidence areas.

What should be considered when traveling by air?

The federal and state governments expect the airlines to test both the crew and the passengers before their return flight to Germany. In addition, the flights are not to be expanded during the Easter holidays. The federal government is planning to change the Infection Protection Act so that a general test requirement can be introduced before departure.

The lifting of the travel warning and quarantine obligation for Mallorca had recently caused discussions. Holidays will still be possible there with appropriate tests. However, the federal and state governments appealed to the airlines not to offer any additional flights for the Easter holidays. They announced that they hadn’t planned that anyway.
