Current Corona numbers in Berlin: 568 of 400,000 students tested positive – number of closed learning groups almost doubled – Berlin

The education administration published new figures on the corona infection situation in Berlin’s schools on Friday. The number of students who tested positive, as well as the number of school staff, has increased slightly compared to last week.

The number of learning groups closed due to quarantine has almost doubled – from 76 to 146. There are particularly many in Mitte (29) and Spandau (23), Steglitz-Zehlendorf only has two closed groups.

A total of 568 students in public schools in Berlin tested positive for the coronavirus with a PCR test. Last week there were 484. A total of around 400,000 students attend schools in Berlin.

The education administration reports 135 infected people among school staff, last week there were 93. A total of around 45,000 employees work at Berlin’s public schools.

According to the education administration, only the Mary Poppins Primary School in Spandau remains completely closed. The school management there had announced that it would go back to distance learning completely by the end of the Easter holidays, after several children had tested positive.

Berlin’s primary school students have been in class since February 22nd, and the top classes of secondary schools since March 17th, are back in face-to-face classes, even if only alternately in half the class size. In view of the increasing number of infections, this is a cause for concern among some parents.

Whether and how often there were infections within schools cannot be inferred from the figures from the education administration. However, the head of the Berlin corona test strategy, Charité professor Frank Mockenhaupt, had stated in a video call with Berlin’s school administrators that he observed that clusters “only rarely” spread in schools, usually there are only one or two cases per learning group. The reasons are not known.

Daycare operations are also affected by corona infections: With 152 facilities, 5.53 percent of Berlin daycare centers are currently partially or completely in quarantine.

The Senate Administration now wants to provide 50,000 self-tests for the daycare centers. Overall, the Senate put the acquisition costs at around 2.5 million euros. “We can see that the incidence of infections is also increasing significantly in day-care centers,” said Education Senator Sandra Scheeres (SPD) on Friday.
