Microsoft’s acquisition of Zenimax Media, and with it Bethesda, id Software, Arkane Studios and more, is on the dry side. The developers of the game “Deathloop”, Arkane Lyon, are surprised by the whole matter. Because although they are now part of the Xbox team, they are still working on an exclusive game for the PlayStation 5: “Deathloop”. An unusual situation that is unlikely to happen again.
Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox division, has made it clear that things will tend to be the other way around in the future: The takeover of ZeniMax Media should secure Xbox users and Game Pass exclusive games. “Deathloop” was contractually guaranteed as the exclusive PlayStation 5 title for a limited time before the takeover. For one year, the game will only be available on Sony’s platform (and PC).
According to the Game Director of “Deathloop”, Dinga Bakaba, they are happy to have a permanent place in the Xbox Game Pass in the future. So it is also a security for the studio to reach players there and to be able to continue developing their games as they have done so far. According to Bakaba, at Arkane you have the feeling that you are now reaching new players who, for example, had missed titles like “Prey” or “Dishonored”, but who would finally give the games a chance.
Sounds like you’re feeling a little free from economic pressures at Arkane. “Deathloop” will be released on May 21, 2021 for the PlayStation 5 and the PC. The game will remain in the console segment exclusively for the PlayStation 5 for one year. So we won’t see the mandatory Xbox version until 2022. Are you interested in the game? Or can you start less with the idiosyncratic art design and time loop mechanics?
