The engagement to her ex-boyfriend opened her eyes. Half a year after the love-out, the singer has officially identified as pansexual.
In the podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience” Demi Lovato spoke more openly than ever about her sexuality. “One reason I’m so open is that I was super closed before,” she says. Whereupon Rogan asks: “You mean sexually open? You like girls? You like boys?” The singer replies: “Yes, everything actually.” When asked whether she would classify herself as pansexual, the star replied “Yes”.
Pansexuality means feeling attracted to people regardless of their biological gender or gender identity. Lovato identifies as part of the LGBTQIA + community, she explains. However, for a long time she had difficulty admitting this part of her personality.
Bisexuality “very frowned upon” in her homeland
Lovato first noticed that she was drawn to women when she saw the kissing scene between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair in “Ice Cold Angels”. The film was shown in cinemas in 1999. She remembers thinking, “Oh, I like that. But I was very ashamed because I grew up a Christian in Texas and this is something that is frowned upon there. So I have every attraction I have to women felt when I was younger, shut down immediately before I could even think about what I was feeling. ”
Her engagement to actor Max Ehrich last year also represented a turning point, she explains. Because before that, she asked herself whether she would be with a man or a woman in the long term. The end of the relationship changed her perspective, she says: “I was engaged to a man last year. I really thought I’d be married by now or maybe even pregnant, but that didn’t happen. So I just stopped tying myself up . I know my life will not go according to my original plan. ”
No relationship with cis men
In an interview with the lifestyle magazine “Glamor” Demi Lovato added that she was in a phase of her life where she felt too queer to be with a cis man. She always liked it better to be sexual with women than with men. She reflects on her relationships with men: “I realized that I valued friendships with these people more than romantic relationships and that I don’t want to have a romantic relationship with someone of the opposite sex.”
Demi Lovato first spoke about her sexuality in October 2017 and that she was ready to date both men and women. In January 2020, she said that she spoke to her parents about her bisexuality for the first time in 2017. In July 2020, she and singer Max Ehrich announced their engagement, the following September the couple separated.
