Ski hammer on the Lenzerheide! The two departures for women and men have been canceled. So Sofia Goggia and Beat Feuz have the little balls safe.
Marco Odermatt and Lara Gut-Behrami suffer such a severe setback in the fight for the overall World Cup. With the no downhill runs, the two lack an important opportunity to gain points on the current leaders Alexis Pinturault and Petra Vlhova.
After the downhill training had to be canceled on Monday and Tuesday, these should be rescheduled this morning.
All options are useless
«We are doing everything humanly possible to ensure that all races take place. Not only for our image, but because we want to give Lara and Marco the chance to win the crystal balls », says OK boss Peter Engler.
The schedule was tight: 9.30 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. the men’s and women’s training sessions, 12.30 p.m. and 1.45 p.m. the races. But even on Wednesday morning, light snowfall trickled down from the sky, which was covered with low-hanging clouds.
At some point the option to move the start further down will no longer be of any use. Already at 7.30 a.m. the message comes: everything canceled!
Team event instead of downhill run – postponements are prohibited by the regulations
The weather should get better during the week. But that doesn’t help Odermatt and Gut-Behrami with regard to the descent. At the World Cup finals, postponements are prohibited by the FIS regulations. Means: either the departures take place on Wednesday or not at all.
Instead, a team event will be held on Friday that has absolutely nothing to do with the World Cup decisions. A joke!
Super-G and giant slalom should be enough now
But that’s not why our two bullet hunters are completely without hope. It is now important that the Super-G can take place on Thursday. In this discipline and in giant slalom, both have the chance to score and make up ground against their opponents. But Pinturault and Vlhova still rely on their slalom skills to secure the big ball.
The starting position is particularly tight for men. Odermatt is 31 points behind Pinturault. Gut-Behrami has 96 points to make up.
Feuz has little ball for sure
But there is also reason to cheer in the Swiss camp. Because there can be no downhill run, Beat Feuz is the winner of the Downhill World Cup. It is the fourth time in a row that the 34-year-old has won the small crystal ball.
With the women, on the other hand, Corinne Suter no longer has a chance to make up the gap. The little ball goes to the last injured Italian Sofia Goggia. (mag / sme)
