Doctoral thesis by Franziska Giffey: FU Berlin changes member of the new examination commission – Berlin

One member has been replaced in the committee that is now re-examining the doctoral thesis of Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD). It has declared itself biased because of a local “administrative function” in one party. This emerges from an unpublished answer by the Berlin State Secretary for Science Steffen Krach (SPD) to a request from CDU MP Adrian Grasse. The letter is available to the Tagesspiegel.

According to this, the corresponding examination commission of the Free University of Berlin (FU) consists of seven experts. Four of them belong to the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the FU, three are external. As State Secretary Krach writes, one of the members stated “recently to have taken on an administrative function in a local branch of a party in Berlin. .

It was not possible to find out which party it was. In any case, a function in one of the government as well as the opposition parties would be tricky in view of the election campaign.

The current committee, last set up by the FU, met for the first time in January 2021. According to the Secretary of State for Science, dates are set until April. According to the FU Presidium, the names of the members will not be published in order not to endanger the “confidential cooperation” in the process.

Giffey is the SPD’s top candidate for the House of Representatives election in September. The former mayor of Berlin-Neukölln and incumbent family minister asked the FU in February 2019 to initiate a review process for her dissertation, which was controversial due to allegations of plagiarism. In October 2019, the university decided to reprimand Giffey for deficiencies in her work, but not to withdraw her doctorate.

After numerous inquiries from the CDU MP Grasse and three FU-external reports, two of which considered a “complaint” to be inadmissible, the FU announced in November 2020 that it would have the doctoral thesis examined again. Social Democrat Giffey had previously announced that she would not use the title.

Giffey did her doctorate in 2010 on “Europe’s Path to Citizens – The European Commission’s Policy on Civil Society Participation”. The Berliner has also been the state chairman of the SPD since last autumn.
