Does Covid-19 cause hearing damage?

It is now known that corona disease can affect various body organs. The consequences of a loss of taste and smell are particularly typical, but the brain, the lungs or the heart can also be damaged. In addition, Covid 19 patients regularly complain of tinnitus and hearing loss after illness.

In the meantime, there is increasing evidence that corona disease can be directly attributed to the hearing damage. However, it has not yet been scientifically proven.

Tinnitus and hearing loss after Covid 19 disease – further studies needed

A new study should now provide further information. In a meta-analysis, the scientists Ibrahim Almufarrij and Kevin Munro found 56 studies in which an increased incidence of hearing disorders after a corona infection was reported. Tinnitus occurred in around 14.8 percent, and 7.6 percent had a sudden deterioration in hearing. In addition, 7.2 percent complained of weight problems and dizziness. The cases occurred in various age groups.

It is currently unclear what caused the damage. One explanation could be that the virus causes inflammation of the auditory nerve or the inner ear. Circulatory disorders are also conceivable: “The cochlea and the auditory canals have no additional, alternative blood supply and are therefore largely susceptible to circulatory disorders,” explain the scientists.
They point out that further clinical studies are necessary in order to have reliable data and to find out the exact cause of the hearing damage: “Despite the alarming figures, we have to take into account that it is so far unclear whether these hearing changes are directly due to Covid-19 or other factors such as treatment or the immune system, “explains Munro.

Corona infection: man loses his hearing

The specialist journal British Medical Journal reports about a man who is said to have lost his hearing due to a corona infection. According to the doctors, the 45-year-old suffered from the symptoms of Sars-CoV-2 for ten days until he was hospitalized.

In spite of the severe illness, the inpatient treatment worked, but the patient had tinnitus on the left side. The constant beeping eventually led to loss of all hearing.

A medical examination showed that the person concerned suffered neither from a blockage nor from an inflammation in the ear. With the help of steroid tablets and injections, the hearing was able to partially recover – however, complete regeneration was no longer possible, the doctors report.

Coronavirus is said to limit hearing

This makes the 45-year-old the first documented case of sensorineural hearing loss due to Corona in Great Britain British Medical Journal. However, if you take a look at the worldwide corona infections, there have already been several cases in which a corona disease had an impact on the patient’s hearing.

Im International Journal Of Audiology There was already a study in July 2020 which assumes that 13.2 percent of all former Covid-19 patients suffer from hearing impairment. In total, the data from 138 ex-corona patients were examined. It turned out, among other things, that the long-term consequences do not depend on the severity of the course of the disease. Patients who had Covid-19 without symptoms were also affected.
