Driver’s license driving test
The new automatic rule will apply from April 1, 2021

From April 1, 2021, the driver’s license test on an automatic car will also apply to cars with manual transmissions. This regulation goes back to an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMVI), also to promote the topic of electromobility. But there are a few things to consider.

So far, drivers who completed their driving test on an automatic car were not allowed to drive a car with a manual transmission – the code number 78 is recorded in the so-called automatic driver’s license. With the abolition of this regulation on April 1st, 2021, learner drivers can take the class B test on a vehicle with an automatic transmission and, under certain conditions, receive permission to drive a car with a manual transmission.

So the learner drivers must after the practical basic training at least ten additional driving hours at 45 minutes with a switching vehicle and the fitness to drive in one at least 15-minute test drive proven in the driving school. These specifications then entitle you to drive a car with a manual transmission – the code number 197 is entered in the driver’s license.

Subsequent changes are possible

Anyone who still has an automatic driver’s license can have their class B driver’s license changed at a later date. Here, the driver’s license holder must give the driving license authority a Certificate from the driving school Submit additional driving lessons and the completed test drive. A new driver’s license test is not required. For all other driving license classes proof must be provided by an additional practical test be provided with a switching vehicle.

Important: It is not possible to cancel the automatic restriction if it was due to medical reasons, i.e. because of a physical impairment or disability, according to the ADAC.

Conclusion

With the change in the automatic rule, Germany is implementing what has been the norm in the EU for years. In view of the growing number of automatic vehicles, including electric vehicles, the control appears to make sense, also to get to know assistance systems that are linked to the automatic transmission.
