First drone flight on Mars planned for April


When Mars comes very close to us, it will be “only” 55 million kilometers away. That doesn’t sound like an impending collision, does it? Precisely for this reason, it is hard to understand for a layman that the Rover Perseverance is positioning itself at this enormous distance to prepare for the first drone flight on a foreign planet.

The rover brings the drone to the launch site

The rover and drone covered about 480 million kilometers in their lander before they reached their destination. This meant that the path was considerably longer than the maximum distance between Mars and Earth, which is 401 million kilometers: This is due to the fact that the start and finish are in constant motion. The cruising speed was more than 76,000 kilometers per hour, the landing took place on February 18, 2021 in the northern hemisphere of Mars. Now Perseverance has set in motion to carry the mini-helicopter over the surface of our neighboring planet to the flat area measuring about 10 by 10 meters, which is intended as the starting point for the drone flight. Incidentally, the rover’s name means something like “perseverance”.

The drone is called »ingenuity«

Of course, the drone also has a name, it’s called »Ingenuity«, meaning ingenuity. In any case, this company is imaginative – and simply not possible without perseverance. The first flight will take place on April 8th at the earliest, according to NASA. Ingenuity can take its lithium-ion batteries up into the air several times for about a month. NASA engineer Håvard Grip explains: “The helicopter should take off, climb to a height of about three meters and then come down again and land. «

The drone does not carry any equipment other than its cameras. Above all, it represents a test model for developing other flying objects for Mars. It weighs 1.8 kilograms on Earth and only 680 grams on Mars. Nevertheless, the small helicopter needs a lot of power to move in the thin atmosphere: its rotor blades have to make 3,000 revolutions per minute, i.e. 10 Times faster than on earth.
