From linear to circular: IKEA transforms previous treasure troves into sustainable “circular hubs”


Vösendorf (OTS) IKEA is convinced that only a business model that values ​​and protects the environment and the planet can be successful. It is clear that the model of the linear “throwaway economy” should neither have a future nor should it have a future. This is exactly where IKEA comes in and today presented the so-called “Circular Hubs” at a digital press conference, which will replace the previous treasure troves in IKEA furniture stores.

IKEA wants to be “People & Planet positive” by 2030. This means keeping the negative effects of your own activities on the environment as low as possible and, at the same time, continuing to grow. In order to achieve this, several goals have been set: There should be a strong focus on switching completely to the circular economy and thus away from a linear economy – also known as the “throwaway economy”. In order to become a circular brand, IKEA aims to extend the shelf life of products and materials and use resources in more thoughtful ways. Part of this transformation journey is the conversion of the treasure troves in the IKEA furniture stores into “circular hubs”.

Services and tips for a sustainable life

“With our size and reach, we have the opportunity to reach more than a billion people – we have to use that. We want to inspire and support them to lead a better life within the possibilities of our planet, ”explains Florian Thalheimer, Country Sustainability Manager IKEA Austria at today’s digital press conference. And that is exactly what the new “Circular Hubs” will offer customers from 25.3. instead of the treasure trove found in Austrian furniture stores, happen. IKEA would like to lead by example and show how the company works with circular economy. On the one hand, knowledge and inspiration about extending the product lifespan should be conveyed. Customers can also use the “Second Life” service to bring back used, well-preserved furniture and receive a credit card for this. The products are then resold in the “Circular Hub” at affordable prices.

The concept around the circular IKEA products has already proven itself in the past: In the past financial year alone, 691,000 recyclable products were given a second chance. With the new “Circular Hubs” we want to build on our success and offer our customers even more. “We want to encourage our visitors with tips and corresponding offers to make more sustainable decisions, give them ideas and inspiration on what can be created from used products so that they can enjoy them for longer”, says Ilse Taferner, Product Quality Manager IKEA Austria.

For this purpose, there will be so-called “Learn & Share” areas in the “Circular Hubs” in every furniture store – places where customers can listen, research and create sustainable solutions themselves. “IKEA fans can currently find DIY ideas on how to make something new out of IKEA products, for example, in the form of videos at If the necessary Covid-19 security measures allow it again, these workshops will then also be held on site, “adds Astrid Grasser, Commercial Activity & Events Leader IKEA Austria.

On the way to becoming a circular company

IKEA has been aware for many years that in order to successfully combat climate change, something has to change in the long term. But now the topic with the “People & Planet Positive” strategy is at the top of the company’s agenda. The aim is to become circular by 2030. For this reason, they began last spring to evaluate all existing IKEA products and assess them from the point of view of recyclability. In order to make all IKEA products recyclable, IKEA continuously trains its employees on the topic of circularity. “Circular thinking is anchored in the minds of our designers, developers, engineers and the many employees around the world. By considering the principles of the circular economy during product development in the future and paying attention to important details, we will design products in such a way that they are suitable for a circular society, ”explains Florian Thalheimer.

There are currently around 11,000 products in the IKEA Austria range – 5,129 of them are sustainable. “That is almost 43 percent of our products, which make up 31.5 percent of total sales. So we are already on the right track, but would like to continue working on offering more circular and sustainable products and solutions. Of course, we will continue to sell new products, but in future we will also address those people who would like to use an item for longer, repair it or pass it on.
