For the first time ever, an international football match of the Austrian men’s national team will be whistled by a woman – the Ukrainian Katerina Monsul has been commissioned to lead. The 39-year-old has already participated in various women’s world and European championships.
Last November, Monsul and her Ukrainian assistants led the Nations League match between San Marino and Gibraltar. It was the first men’s international match in which the referee team was exclusively female. In the Happel Stadium, however, Monsul receives male assistance. FB team player Aleksandar Dragovic said of the referees that he didn’t care whether a man or a woman whistled. “She will do her best and do her job well,” said the defender.
