After beating Hungary (3-0) at the start of the European Championship, the German U21 had a great chance of booking the quarter-finals with a win against the Netherlands. For this undertaking, DFB trainer Stefan Kuntz relied on a defensive three-man chain. On the outside, Baku and Jakobs, who started for space, were supposed to provide depth. Nevertheless, the German team struggled with the stable defense of the Dutch from the start. In the offensive, where Özcan played for the ailing Burkhardt (adductor problems), much remained fragmentary.

No flow of the game – Lang has to go down early

The Netherlands, who had only played 1: 1 against Romania at the start, were just as unwilling to take the initiative. The Dutch coach Erwin van de Looi, who had changed his starting eleven to three positions – Botman played for Berlin Zeefuik, Harroui started for Reis in midfield and Gakpo instead of Boadu in the storm – had to make another change after 22 minutes: Long was Clashed with Koopmeiners so unhappily that he had to be replaced – the treatment breaks were just two of the many interruptions in the first half.

As the game progressed, the Dutch became more active and hit the post in the 36th minute by de Wit. Only a little later, Schlotterbeck gave Kluviert a second chance in the penalty area, but the Leipzig attacker couldn’t capitalize on it from a tight angle (39th). In the German U21s, Maier was always the linchpin, but too often the last pass lacked the decisive accuracy – only approaches developed offensively: Pieper headed over after a corner (32nd) and Berisha shot too centrally at Keeper Scherpen ( 40.).

Dahmen fails, Kluivert hits

The second half started very unhappy for the German team, especially for Dahmen, who made a serious mistake on his birthday, of all places: After a throw-in by Vagnoman, the keeper took the ball badly and then hit to clear it up before the approaching Kluivert , over the ball. The Leipzig striker only had to push into the empty goal to take the lead (48th).

Germany tried to find an answer and slipped deeper into the Dutch half, but made too many playback errors. Maier’s standards were also not a means of breaking the Dutch defensive bar – Schlotterbeck had the best chance, but headed next to the goal (77th). The Netherlands, on the other hand, did not do more than necessary and rarely dared excursions – Kluivert closed too centrally on Dahmen (57th).

Burkardt comes and prepares the compensation

In the final quarter of an hour, Stefan Kuntz brought new momentum to the German offensive game with two double changes: Raum, Klimowicz, Stach (U-21 debut) and Burkhardt came. Between the two double changes, Pieper forced Keeper Scherpen to make his best save (81st). Only three minutes later, Kuntz’s move paid off: Burkhardt made Botman look old and served Nmecha in an exemplary manner, who equalized 1-1 (84th).
