The man had been convicted of two murders by the Berlin Regional Court on May 30, 1963, after he had attacked a couple in their car and later shot them.
At that time he was sent to the “prison” in Berlin, as prisons with particularly harsh conditions were called at the time. He was only 25 years old. He later sat in the penal institution in Bruchsal near Karlsruhe. At least in Baden-Württemberg, he is the longest prisoner, as a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Justice in Stuttgart said.
The responsible courts had repeatedly rejected his applications for suspension of the remainder of the life sentence on probation in previous years. Most recently, the Karlsruhe Regional Court rejected his request in May of last year. The man’s lawyer had lodged a complaint against this – with success. The OLG granted the application by decision of March 17th. Exactly when he will be released from the Bruchsal detention center has not been announced for reasons of privacy protection.
