The German Chancellor Angela Merkel performed at Anne Will’s on Sunday evening. She called for a much tougher approach to the corona pandemic. Merkel described the latest federal-state summit as a “turning point”.
Merkel spoke to Anne Will about her apology to Germany after withdrawing from the Easter lockdown.
Nevertheless, she is determined to slow down the 3rd wave.
She sees exit restrictions as a potentially “important means”.
“It was not feasible at all,” said Chancellor Angela Merkel about her withdrawal from the Easter lockdown on Sunday evening on the ARD program “Anne Will”. There were many questions from the population and from the economy. Therefore, she came to the conclusion that the Easter lockdown was a mistake. And that’s why the population deserved an apology.
Nevertheless, it could not go on like this, said Merkel. The Chancellor called for tough action in the pandemic. “The point now is to break the third wave.” The Chancellor passed the ball back to the federal states. The federal government and the federal states need each other, the paths – for example via the Bundestag and Bundesrat – have to be considered. She described the country summit on how to deal with the corona pandemic as a “caesura”.
“We have to take the appropriate measures with great seriousness,” said Merkel. She referred to exit restrictions for a “very important means”, this applies “especially in the evening hours”. It also brought new contact restrictions into play “to stop the exponential growth”. Merkel also appealed to better implement the requirements for working in the home office. This obligation has become too “lax”.
Angela Merkel speaks of a “new pandemic”
Angela Merkel affirmed that she would “not stand idly by for the next 14 days”. She would repeat the sentence she addressed to citizens a year ago: “It is serious, please take it seriously.” The Chancellor emphasized that further measures are necessary and that loosening is too risky. With that she sent a warning to the country chiefs. “We have a new pandemic,” she said, referring to the British mutation that is currently widespread in Germany.
According to Merkel, the “emergency brake” decided by the federal and state governments gives opportunities for action. Unfortunately, this is not observed everywhere. Merkel rejected so-called model experiments to open up areas of social life despite high corona incidence figures. You do not believe “that this is a way that will lead us to break the third wave,” said the Chancellor. In Saarland, for example, which has corresponding plans for the time after Easter, “the basis for this is not given” given the increasing number of infections.
No need for new summit
However, the Chancellor currently sees no need for a rapid Corona summit with the state prime ministers. “We don’t need a prime ministerial conference, we need action in the federal states.” It is not yet “all so free of illusions that this virus cannot be negotiated with”. There is still too much hope in the game. The existing resolutions can be used as a basis.
Angela Merkel’s appearance was eagerly awaited. After Germany decided to extend the lockdown until Easter last Tuesday after a historic marathon session, the federal states received sharp criticism. On Wednesday, Merkel took back the decision on the “Easter peace” and apologized publicly to the German population.
