IAA auto show again on the brink

Different location, more modern concept: the IAA auto show wanted a fresh start. Instead, it may be near the end. And that’s not just due to the corona pandemic.

The IAA auto show is again facing big question marks. She wanted with her Move to Munich start all over again. And the corona pandemic is only one of the reasons for the once again uncertain future.

For Munich’s Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter, the matter is clear. The SPD man says: If the Oktoberfest has to be canceled again, the IAA cannot take place either. The preparations for the folk festival are in progress. However, it is not yet clear whether it will take place.

VDA is planning further

The Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), which organizes the fair, has a different opinion: “The IAA cannot be compared with the Oktoberfest,” says a spokesman for the lobby association. “That is why the planning for the fair continues.”

Instead of only being shown in the halls of an exhibition center, as was previously the case, the mobility of the future will also be shown and discussed in the urban environment. The focus is still on the car. “But we give a platform to all forms of mobility: from bicycles to public transport,” says the VDA. After a moderate IAA 2019 and criticism of the fair, it is now to take place in a new form for the first time in Munich instead of Frankfurt am Main.

However, criticism of the recently controversial trade fair is already growing in the Bavarian capital. The action alliance “noIAA” protests against the event: Even if you give it a green paint, the IAA remains a “symbol for profit maximization at the expense of people, the environment and the climate.”

Industry is holding back

On top of that, large parts of the industry are even tired of the IAA: Horrific costs, bad press – who else wants this trade fair? The interest of manufacturers and their suppliers is in the basement, it is said that so far only a few companies have made a firm commitment. The situation is so serious that the VDA is under pressure to act. He now wants to discuss the future of the IAA at a board meeting.

Only a few seem to be really attached to the auto show. However, it has a strong fan base among Munich’s hoteliers: for the first days of the trade fair (scheduled from 6 to 12 September 2021) they have already tripled their room rates compared to August.
