In Italy, Carabinieri have come across around 29 million AstraZeneca vaccine doses. The amount corresponds to about twice the previous deliveries to the EU.

Around 29 million vaccine doses from the manufacturer AstraZeneca have been discovered near Rome, according to Italian media reports. According to this, representatives of the authorities came across the vaccine during an inspection of the plant of the Italian company Catalent in Anagni. The vaccination doses were stored there in the company’s cooling systems, it said. The EU Commission confirmed the find.
Catalent produces corona vaccine on behalf of AstraZeneca. In this case, however, it is said to be vaccination doses that had previously been produced in the Netherlands and filled in Italy. According to a report by the Italian newspaper “La Stampa”, the inspection in the buildings of the pharmaceutical company was carried out on the basis of indications from the EU Commission. Authorities suspect that the vaccine was intended for export to the UK, the newspaper continued.
The Italian government confirmed the find. According to her information, the cans are to be brought to Belgium. It is unclear whether they should be exported from there or distributed in the EU.
EU Commission argues with AstraZeneca
The EU Commission has been in dispute with AstraZeneca for a long time. She criticized the British-Swedish company for failing to meet its obligations to deliver vaccines to the EU.
Among other things, due to missing AstraZeneca vaccination doses, there have been delays in the vaccination campaign in several EU countries. The number of vaccine doses now found in Italy is roughly double the amount that AstraZeneca has so far delivered to the European Union.
