The communication service Discord has around 100 million users per month during the Corona crisis. Now Microsoft supposedly wants to benefit from the large user base.
Microsoft is said to have shown interest in the Discord communications service.
An insider from the environment of both companies made this public.
Microsoft is said to be willing to pay $ 10 billion for Discord.
It is not yet publicly known whether there is anything to the rumors.
Tech giant Microsoft is said to have had its eye on the communications service Discord. This is reported by the Bloomberg news agency based on reports from an insider from the environment of the two companies. In fact, Microsoft is said to be ready to spend ten billion dollars on the takeover.
Discord is an online communication platform on which users can send text messages, but also make video and audio calls. The platform is particularly popular with gamers, as Discord’s software is designed to work with video games. For example, a Discord voice chat can be displayed within games and it is also possible to link gaming activities with Discord so that the status of a user automatically shows which game the person is currently playing.
Expand gaming division
As with many other online communication platforms, Discord gained attention and user base during the corona pandemic. Around 100 million users are now communicating via Discord every month – also far beyond the gamer scene.
A possible acquisition of Discord by Microsoft makes sense, so the Bloomberg analyst Matthew Kanterman: “Microsoft tries again and again to redesign the gaming business. This also means that it tries out various software and services. ” This was shown, among other things, with the acquisition of the gaming studio ZeniMax Media Inc, which, for example, publishes the online game “The Elder Scrolls Online”. Microsoft paid $ 7.5 billion for this. For example, Kantermann can imagine that Microsoft could build Discord’s premium service, Nitro, into the Xbox Game Pass.
It is not yet known whether there is anything to the rumors. Neither Microsoft nor Discord have commented publicly on this.
