Judo: Shamil Borchashvili only lost in the Tbilisi Grand Slam in the final

In this he was defeated by the Belgian Sami Chouchi in the class up to 81 kg with Ippon. For the 25-year-old from Upper Austria, however, it is a great success. He got 500 World Cup points, wrote in the Olympic qualification and received the equivalent of a good 2,500 euros. Michaela Polleres (-70 kg), Magdalena Krssakova (-63) and Lukas Reiter (-73) lost at the beginning.

Borchashvili had prevailed in the pool final against the Russian Alan Kubeuow by Ippon (self-fall technique) in the Golden Score, in the semifinals the Canadian World Cup third Antoine Valois-Fortier had to give up after a good minute because of a rib injury. In the final, Borchashvili landed a supposed Ippon rating after just twelve seconds, but after studying video only waza-ari was given.

“The decision to Waza-ari was absolutely correct,” said ÖJV sports director Markus Moser. “Chouchi just fell on his side. It’s a shame that Shamil lost in the end. But he can be proud of this result. His first win on the World Tour is only a matter of time.” The decision was made after 62 seconds of fighting time by a stranglehold by Chouchi, as a result of which Borchashvili was briefly passed out.

Already on Friday Sabrina Filzmoser (-57 kg) remained unplaced after winning and losing to the eventual final winner. On Sunday, Bernadette Graf (-78) will make her comeback, the Tyrolean’s last competition so far before the corona outbreak. Also named are Aaron Fara (-100) as well as Daniel Allerstorfer and Stephan Hegyi (each +100).
