Seven tug boats in action
The traffic in the Suez Canal came to a standstill, 15 other ships behind the 200,000 ton freighter are stuck at anchorages on the route to the north, and a southbound convoy was also stopped.
Vessel tracking data on Refinitiv Eikon showed seven tug boats attempting to pull the freighter bound for Rotterdam. The Suez Canal Authority SCA could not initially be reached for an opinion.
Almost 19,000 ships – or an average of 51.5 ships per day – took the waterway as an abbreviation in 2020, according to the SCA, saving themselves the need to circumnavigate Africa. About twelve percent of the world trade volume passes through the canal, which is an important source of income for Egypt. (SDA)
