The CDU member of the Bundestag Karin Strenz died surprisingly on Sunday. Now the Schwerin public prosecutor has initiated a death investigation. In this way, information on the cause of death could be obtained from the Irish authorities, a spokesman for the agency said.
He assumes that Strenz’s body will be autopsied in Ireland. The Schwerin public prosecutor’s office has no knowledge of the cause of death, and therefore no evidence of a possibly non-natural death.
Strenz comes from Lübz in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, for which the Schwerin public prosecutor is responsible. The 53-year-old CDU politician collapsed on the return flight from Cuba to Germany in the plane accompanied by her husband and died after an emergency landing in Shannon, Ireland. Why she was in Cuba is unclear. On behalf of the Bundestag, she was not on the road, said a parliamentary spokesman.
“Undoubtedly a human tragedy”
Strenz’s death was “undoubtedly a human tragedy,” declared the CDU state chairman for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Michael Sack, and the CDU parliamentary group leader in the state parliament, Wolfgang Waldmüller. Strenz had been a member of the state parliament at times since 2002, and since 2009 she has been a member of the Bundestag.
Union parliamentary group leader Ralph Brinkhaus was also dismayed: »The sudden death of our colleague Karin Strenz affects us all very much. Our deepest sympathy goes to her family in these difficult hours, ”it said in a statement. The news of Strenz’s death shook him deeply, said Eckhardt Rehberg, chairman of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regional group.
Strenz was criticized for lobbying. In 2019, the Bundestag fined her for being a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe involved in a scandal over bribes from Azerbaijan. Last year the politician’s rooms were searched by the police.
