As an exception, they are now selling them over the Internet, as reported by the newspaper “La Croix” (online Friday). Within three days, at least one of the 2.8 tons of excess cheese should be over the ramp. The fault is: the corona pandemic.

“There are fewer customers in the shops and the restaurants are closed,” says Brother Jean-Claude, marketing officer for the abbey, which was founded in 1098. The decline in sales is almost 50 percent. They tried to explain to the 75 cows that they need to produce less milk – “but they don’t seem to understand that,” said the monk with a laugh. The outer walls cannot be moved either.

The Reblochon cheese has been produced since 1925 and won the silver medal at the international competition in Lyon in 2020. “We usually refuse orders,” says the monk. You sell to Hong Kong, Tokyo or Dubai. The normal annual turnover is around 1.2 million euros. Until Tuesday (March 30), the abbey will now be offering its unsold goods through the start-up “Divine Box”, which specializes in the online sale of products from religious orders.
