Because of the third wave of corona, France has extended its lockdown: Since Saturday, shops in three other departments have been closed and citizens’ freedom of movement has been restricted. In total, the stricter corona requirements now affect 19 administrative districts with more than 23 million people.
The lockdown has been in effect in the greater Paris area and parts of northern and southern France for a week. Since Saturday, the Rhone department around the city of Lyon has also been affected, as well as the administrative districts of Aube south-east of Paris and Nièvre south of the capital.
Leave the region only for “compelling reasons”
Almost all shops for non-daily needs are now closed again, the residents of the affected departments are only allowed to leave their regions for “compelling” reasons. Walks are limited to a radius of ten kilometers. In addition, the class size in the grammar schools will be reduced by half – in contrast to other European countries, however, the schools will remain open.
On Saturday, the authorities tightened controls at airports, train stations and toll roads to monitor compliance with the restrictions. They should be increased again during rush hour.
Germany and Spain are becoming stricter
On Friday, the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin declared all of France a high incidence area. This means that a negative corona test will be mandatory for entry into Germany from Sunday.
Spain announced on Saturday that from Tuesday every traveler aged six and over must show a negative PCR test before entering France. So far this has only applied to air travelers; Since the end of January, however, the general compulsory test has already been in force for entry from Spain to France.
Over 90,000 people died of or with Corona
France is in the middle of the third corona wave. The mark of 200,000 new cases of infection per week has now been exceeded. At around 4,800, the number of Covid patients in the intensive care units on Friday was just below the high of the second wave in autumn. Over 94,000 people have died of or with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. President Emmanuel Macron has already prepared the citizens for “difficult” weeks.
Next Wednesday, the so-called Defense Council will advise on tightening the penalties for violations of the Corona rules. On Sunday, the Science Council should comment on a possible renewed postponement of the regional and departmental elections. The government has already announced that it will adhere to the recommendations of its advisory body. (AFP)
