At the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, a gynecologist is said to have molested female students for decades.
Now the university pays over a billion dollars in total in compensation to hundreds of women.
The doctor rejects the allegations.
In the abuse scandal involving a former gynecologist at the University of Southern California (USC) in California, the university agreed to a gigantic compensation payment. As announced in court on Thursday, the USC will pay a total of $ 852 million to hundreds of women. Since the university had already promised compensation of $ 215 million in another class action in 2018, it has to pay more than a billion dollars in damages in total.
Criminal proceedings are also pending against the gynecologist in question, who is now 74 years old. He was charged with numerous sexual assaults on female students in 2019. The doctor, who worked at the university from 1989 to 2016, denies the allegations.
According to the indictment, the gynecologist allegedly touched female students inappropriately and photographed their private parts during examinations. The women’s allegations came to light in 2018. Hundreds of them filed civil lawsuits against the doctor or the university. The harassment is said to go back to the 1990s, but in some cases the statute of limitations already applies. The university has long ignored complaints from patients or nurses, the prosecution said.
