Right next to Kristin Weiskopf, her son Jay (9) splashes in the sea water. Then it happens: the mother hears her child cry out in pain, the water around Jay turns red. The boy was attacked by a shark – and that in waist-high water!
The mother reacts immediately and pulls her son up. “A large piece of meat was missing on his shoulder and he had several bite wounds on the right side of the body and on his arm,” the mother writes on Facebook. In the water, which is colored red by the blood, the mother sees a 1.50 meter long shark swimming away.
This incident occurred during the Weiskopf family vacation in Miami Beach, Florida (USA). Little Jay survived the attack and is currently recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.
“My child is completely traumatized”
The large wound that runs from the right shoulder to the stomach had to be sewn with 20 stitches. The dozen other, less deep bite wounds were also treated medically.
“My child is completely traumatized,” says Kristin Weiskopf. Despite the terrible incident, the family is overjoyed that their son survived the attack: “Our son will recover and be able to come home with us. We thank God for that! ”Says Ren Weiskopf, the boy’s father.
57 shark attacks worldwide
What happened to their son, the parents share on Facebook – Kristin and Ren Weiskopf want to warn other people. Jay’s fate is to be spared as many as possible. Nowhere are there as many shark attacks as in Florida. According to the Florida Museum of National History’s 2020 annual report, 16 of the 57 worldwide incidents occurred in Florida, with all victims surviving.
At the top is the US with 33 attacks and one fatality, followed by Australia with 18 incidents and six deaths. A total of ten people died last year as a result of a shark attack. (une)
