The Migros Basel cooperative achieved sales of CHF 982.9 million last year. That is 6.2 percent or 57.7 million more than in 2019. Compared to the previous year, profit increased by 2.5 million to 19.4 million francs.
In a statement on Wednesday, Migros Basel, based in Münchenstein, described the 2020 financial year under the sign of the corona pandemic as “extraordinary”, “unpredictable” and “challenging”.
Sales in the supermarkets / wholesaling segment rose by CHF 79.7 million to CHF 784.3 million. On the other hand, Migros Basel suffered losses in the catering / other sectors due to the corona pandemic. Turnover in the catering sector fell by CHF 16.1 million to CHF 44.3 million. In the rest of the division, which includes the cooperative’s fitness center and club school, sales fell by CHF 5.5 million to CHF 25.9 million.
Corona bonus for employees
For a total of 1000 products, the prices were reduced last year, it says in the message. In addition to regional foods, the demand for organic products was also very high in 2020. The organic share of the shopping cart has increased by 20 percent compared to the previous year.
Investments fell from CHF 24 million to CHF 23 million last year.
In 2020, Migros Basel operated a total of 97 sales outlets in the cantons of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Jura, Bern and Solothurn. That’s the same number as last year.
The number of employees decreased by 90 to 3,352. The number of full-time equivalents was 2,444, 29 fewer than in 2019. The Migros Basel Cooperative thanked its employees with gift cards totaling CHF 1 million for their extraordinary commitment during the corona pandemic. In addition, a corona bonus totaling CHF 800,000 was paid out in mid-2020.
