Milliken & Company (“Milliken”), a global and diversified manufacturer with over 150 years of experience in materials science, has officially announced the acquisition of Zebra-chem GmbH (“Zebra-chem”).

Zebra-chem is a global chemical company and is known for its peroxide and propellant masterbatches. As more and more brand owners and governments around the world seek the increased use of recycled materials, plastics manufacturers are faced with the challenge of implementing the effective use of recycled plastics. Peroxide masterbatches such as those from Zebra-chem and Milliken make it possible to increase the recyclate content in new plastics up to 100%.

Focus: sustainability and innovation

“Milliken’s traditional focus on innovation and sustainability encourages us to consider how we can help solve some of the most pressing challenges of our time, such as how to effectively incorporate recycled plastics into manufacturing,” said Halsey Cook, President and CEO of Milliken & Company . “I am delighted to welcome Zebra-chem and, together with their outstanding expertise, to increase the pace of our sustainable innovations.”

Zebra-chem, based in Bad Bentheim in Lower Saxony, produces a portfolio of well-known chemical blowing agent masterbatches and peroxide masterbatches for use in most thermoplastics and engineering plastics.

Zebra-chem: strong in Europe

“Zebra-chem’s leadership position in Europe allows us to leverage their congruent innovation platforms, global presence and commercial expertise to accelerate marketable solutions for improved manufacturing with recycled plastics,” said Wim Van de Velde, Vice President of Milliken’s Chemical Division for Europe, Middle East and Africa. “Our combined competencies will make it easier for us to offer faster and more tailor-made solutions with which our customers can achieve their sustainability goals.”

The bundling of the strengths of Milliken and Zebra-chem opens up new potential for advanced solutions that advance and optimize plastics recycling. Customers will benefit from increased research and development capabilities, mutual knowledge sharing and a broader product portfolio from reliable, industry-leading manufacturing.

Day-to-day operations, including relationships with existing suppliers and customers, will continue uninterrupted during the integration of Zebra-chem.

Milliken was represented on the transaction by Jones Day and BDO acted as financial advisor to Milliken.
