In Germany, according to observations by the state Robert Koch Institute, the role of children and adolescents appears to be changing in the spread of the new corona virus.
The number of corona cases increased in all age groups, but particularly strongly among children and adolescents, according to the RKI’s latest online management report. Outbreaks currently particularly affect private households, but increasingly also daycare centers, schools and the professional environment, while the number of outbreaks in old people’s and nursing homes has decreased.
In children up to 14 years of age, according to the RKI data, the 7-day incidences have more than doubled across Germany in the past four weeks – to more than 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. For paediatricians, in addition to the increasing opening of daycare centers and schools, increased testing can also play a role.
The increase was evident early in toddlers
The openings are of course an opportunity for parents to have their children tested, said Reinhard Berner, member of the board of the German Society for Child and Adolescent Medicine, the Berlin “Tagesspiegel”. “That just often didn’t happen before when the child was in lockdown at home and had a cold.”
According to the RKI, the increase in registered cases of infection in the age group up to five years shows itself particularly early on. This also applies to the data on outbreaks in daycare centers. They rose rapidly. A similar development is indicated after the schools have opened up. The increasing spread of the more easily transferable variant B.1.1.7 plays a role in this development.
Patients in Brazil are younger than ever
It is not only in Germany that more and more young people are becoming infected with Corona. In Brazil, too, patients are getting younger. Particularly frightening: The difficult courses are increasing. Also suspected here: the so-called P.1 variant of the E484K mutation.
According to a recent study, it is up to 2.2 times easier to transmit – and thus causes many new infections. In eight Brazilian states, more than half of all corona cases can be traced back to “worrying variants”. The national health research institute Fiocruz reported on March 4th. The P.1 variant plays a major role in this study, but the British and South African variants were also found.
Hospitals across the country are reporting that more and more young people are in intensive care because of the coronavirus – and many of them are dying there too. In the current wave of infections in Brazil, patients are younger than ever before. (SDA / jmh)
