The numbers have not been so high since January: 22,657 new infections have been reported to the Robert Koch Institute since yesterday. The 7-day incidence increased to 113.3. RKI boss Wieler sees only one means.
The development at the beginning of the year gave cause for hope. The number of infections fell continuously – until mid-February. Since then, the curve has risen again. The mark of 20,000 new infections reported per day has now been reached again. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) registered 22,657 new cases within 24 hours and 228 more deaths related to coronavirus. Last Wednesday, the RKI recorded 17,504 new infections and 227 corona deaths within one day.
The seven-day incidence increased from 108.1 to 113.3. The nationwide R-value is still 1. This means that 100 infected people infect 100 more people. This value represents the infection process from 8 to 16 days ago.
Wieler calls for lockdown – Reinhardt relies on relaxation and tests
From the point of view of RKI boss Lothar Wieler, the lockdown is the only sensible way to stop the increase in infections. Wiler said at an online event of the German embassy in Washington: “We cannot stop this increase unless with a new lockdown for the country”. No other tools are currently available to contain the third wave.
German Medical Association President Klaus Reinhardt, on the other hand, called for more options than lockdown to be considered when fighting the corona pandemic. “The month-long yo-yo permanent lockdown wears people down. It must not be our only answer to the third wave of corona,” Reinhardt told the editorial network in Germany. There are promising approaches that enable a return to normal social life. Reinhardt cited cities such as Tübingen or Rostock as examples, which worked with local loosening and rapid tests.
RKI boss Wieler: the increase in the number of infections can only be stopped with a lockdown
